Uncovering & examining the beliefs we have about ourselves is some of the deepest & most transformative work we can do.

Because what we believe to be true about ourselves shapes our lives.

Who we think we are affects our decisions & our reactions. Our beliefs about ourselves determine our behaviors, patterns & habits.

So who do you think you are? What do you believe to be true about you? And do those beliefs serve the highest, best version of who you want to be?

A helpful way to dig deep & discover your self beliefs is to do this simple yet powerful 5 step exercise:

Step 1: Get a pen & a piece of paper- yes paper! (research has shown that the physical act of handwriting increases neural activity & stimulates our brains in the same way that meditation does!)

Step 2:  Fill in the blank after the words I AM. I am X and I am Y. And repeat. Over and over again. Just keep filling in the I AM statements. It might be easiest to start with roles or titles such as I am a mother or I am a Canadian just to get the flow going. Then keep digging and see what comes up for you. Write as fast as you can and let the I AMs come to you.

Step 3: Once you have your I lAM list, look it over. What are some of the I AMs that support your dreams such as “I am a talented singer”. What are the ones that hold you back such as “I am unlucky in love”?

Step 4: See if you can challenge those I AMs that don’t serve you. Are they really true? Where did you learn them? Can you flip the script on some of them as in-  Instead of “I am always unlucky in love” try “I am ready & open for a new relationship” or “I am loving myself and becoming ready for a new relationship”.

Step 5:  Be kind and gentle with yourself. Discovering who you think you are is Big Work. Work that brings up trauma and subconscious beliefs. So be kind and gentle with yourself as you work on your I AMs.

And remember that all of our beliefs-including those about ourselves are just thoughts that we continue to think and that we accept as true. Most of them come from early childhood and are buried so deeply in our subconscious programming that they have just become “who we are”.

Self awareness is how real change begins. We are creating our lives through our I AMs. So if you want to change your life you must do the the work to discover what you believe to be true about you.

Who do you think you are? And who do you want to be?

Can you create a new I AM?
