Brighten the Corner
I’ve been thinking a lot about what one person of privilege can do help champion the change that desperately needs to happen in our world. In the face of a horribly broken system and overwhelming injustices, can one person really make a difference?
One result of this self reflection is that I have a song from childhood stuck in my head. I keep hearing the lyrics of a simple little song- called “Brighten the Corner Where You Are”.
The refrain goes like this:
“Brighten the corner where you are! Brighten the corner where you are! Someone far from harbor you many guide across the bar!”
In other words, we all have the ability to take action to influence others and to change our world- wherever you are and however small the act might seem, you can “brighten your corner”.
Brighten the corner where you are. We all can do something. We all must do something.
Do whatever feels right to you to brighten your corner.
Even if it feels uncomfortable. Especially if it feels uncomfortable.
If it feels right to protest- then brighten that corner.
If it feels right to donate- then brighten that corner
If it feels right to educate - then brighten that corner
If it feels right to listen and learn- then brighten that corner
If it feels right to question your intentions and reflect - then brighten that corner
Our systems are broken and our world must change. We can all do something, We must all do something. Start where you are. Speak up. Show up.
Who can you help guide across the bar?
If we all work to brighten our corners, we will shine a light into this dark and weary world.
