Broaden & Build.
Positivity is a superpower.
We all know that we feel better when we experience positive emotions such as joy and gratitude but research proves that experiencing these positive emotions actually changes our brains and make us more resilient.
Positive psychologists have been studying the power of emotions for several years.
One of the most influential theories on the topic is Dr. Barbara Frederickson’s broaden and build theory.
Her research explores how positive emotions “broaden” us- they allow us to see possibilities, make better decisions, be more creative and able to find win/win solutions, make us more trusting and able to see others perspectives.
Positive emotions also help us “build” our reserves- they make us more emotionally resilient and connected so we are able to bring calm to stressful situations.
Conversely , negative emotions narrow our focus and force us into the survival emotions of flight, fight or shut down.
The benefits that positivity brings are not just emotional- Positive emotions actually change us biologically through increased dopamine and serotonin, the feel good chemicals that actually turn on the learning centers in our brains.
If we want to reap the biological rewards of positivity, We have to retrain our negatively wired brains. We are wired biologically to look for the negative because it keeps us safe. But we don’t want to just survive, we want to thrive.
So how do we learn to Broaden and Build on our positive emotions? How do we learn to practice positivity?
Like all change, it starts with a Decision. Make the simple decision to be more positive.
Then....
Study happiness. Look for the good today. Meditate. Journal. Play. Laugh. Be grateful. Be kind.
If we can learn to harness the potential of our positive emotion we have the ability to live happier and more successful lives.
How will you Practice Positivity today?
